Do you think that distributing copyrighted material without the input of the respective artists is the best thing to do in getting your message across? how can you sleep at night?Something needs to change in the way the Music Industry is run. But, change only occurs when the pain of staying the same outstrips the pain of change. At the moment we are seeing, with crystal clarity, the pain of staying the same. Major Recording Companies have declared war on their consumers, the music loving public. Old men in suits rope helpless musicians into contracts they can't refuse. And then of course there is the pain of change. Forcing the big 5 Recording Companies (those that own 90% of all recorded music) to acknowledge a shift in consumer demand. Requiring them to embrace a new fluidity in music consumption. Breaking up the unnecessary oligopoly that is the music industry today. Record Companies will bear the pain of this change. Musicians and music lovers will bear the pain of staying the same. Furthermore, change only comes of action. Never of words. Always by people getting out at a grassroots level and acting on what they believe in. Should I write a letter to my local member of parliament? Should I email the RIAA to let them know I disagree with their stance on the future of music consumption? No. I should start up my own website. One that practices what I preach. One that might force the powers that be to change their attitude. Thats where you are now. Thealt. I suppose if i put aside the rhetoric for a second i can tell you this.... any damage that might be done by this site to the interests of Sony or Warner Brothers music, is more then compensated for by the good done to Artists not big enough to get their music distributed internationally or covered properly by commercial radio. When all is said and done, it is sites like this one, and not the RIAA, that will usher in the new paradigm for music distribution and consumption. I sleep quite comfortably at night.
