Great backup and storage…
I bought this around $130 early in 2009. You can find cheaper price for the same capacity with other brands, but I read that the speed and reliability may not match up with WD passport. After several months of use, I’m happy with the speed, size, and reliability of WD Passport. I use it as personal storage for data, music and pictures. I don’t want to keep my personal stuff in my work laptop. I have a PC at home and I backup the passport to a drive on my PC. So far 300Gb of data doesn’t take too long to copy.

Great product
love it, followed recomendation to format it to get rid off extra stuff and it works great. Took it to Europe for a month long trip and downloaded all photos and video to it.

Died in one week. Lost 8 years worth of data. MA thesis, book in progress, pictures, music, thousands of hours of work…
This external hard drive DIED after only ONE WEEK. I bought it to hold all of my data while my computer got a new hard drive and, for no reason at all, it just stopped working. I lost 8 years worth of writing, including my master’s thesis and a book in progress. Also gone are all of my pictures, music, correspondence and work. Western Digital does not cover any portion of data recovery and although they will replace the external hard drive, it is crazy, in my opinion, to trust the same product again. I’d keep looking for another product…

Great portable backup drive
The write speed is not quite as fast as I would like but the capacity is great for laptop backup jobs. The Elite has a greater warranty (5 years)than the Essential. Overall this is a great portable drive.

WD Passport Elite 500gb
The WD Passport Elite 500gb hard drive is a great product and the price is very reasonable. I have only had the drive for about a month so, I cannot comment on its long term reliability. The drive is small and easy to carry around. While the drive comes with a slip case, you will want to buy a hard case for extra protection. As advertised, the drive is easily powered by the usb cable, no power adapter is needed. The drive also comes with backup and sync software installed. I use the drive as an extra backup solution at home and at work. I also use TrueCrypt to encrypt the whole drive for privacy. Everything works great, I could not be more pleased.

Western Digital WD1600AAJB
This was ordered to replace an old small (30GB) hard drive, to set up a dual-boot for Windows 2000 / Linux. The drive worked fine, no problems. (Yes, Windows 2000! Yes, this is 2009.)

A great drive for the price.
I purchased this drive to replace the existing 80GB Western Digital hard drive on my Dell Dimension 4600, which had failed after 5 years of hard service. This drive from Amazon.com arrived earlier than estimated, in secure packaging, and installed easily (I had a buddy of mine who helped me install it and install Windows). Runs quietly, and somehow the computer seems to run much faster than when we were using the 80GB WD. I’m now in the market to get another of these drives as a secondary on this computer. I’m a happy customer!

Internal hard disk replacement
I installed this disk on a dell XPS, 3GHz, 2GB memory. The machine is 6 years old and it was about time to replace the original disk. The installation went smoothly using Apricorn EZ Gig II software. I have three bays with two disks so the actual physical switching was kept to a minimum. I have had no trouble with this disk since I installed it and it sure runs faster than the old one which was very busy recovering errors.

Excellent Drive to Renovate Old Computer
I’m using this Hard Drive with a Syba Combo IDE/SATA PCI Card SY-VIA-150 and rather elderly HP pavilion a742x Desktop with XP SP3. It works quite well and was an easy install. The HP pavilion a742x has a 160 GB HD, so being able to add a 1 TB HD was great.

The drive was well packed suspended in a plastic “cradle” inside a carton. UPS didn’t crush the carton. I’m happy!

Great Choice
These drive were easy to set up in Windows 7 64k saw it the first time. They are very quiet and save energy what more to like.

Great hard drive for the money.
Have 3 of these running 24/7 without an issue. Have tons of high definition movies on these and they handle them great. Not sure about the power rating on these. If you are looking at these for storage of movies etc, don’t need to look further at these prices. Still waiting for the SSD to drop in prices, until then guess we need to use these .

Awsome Drive
I have a bunch of these for video streaming, backups, and everyday use. I have never a failure or issue, they are quality drives.

The only issue to be aware of is that Amazon sends them poorly packaged, often the OEM box in an Amazon box with insufficient (or no) packing material. The OEM box only uses cardboard cutouts for support, so the Amazon box should be cushioned better.

too slow to be of any real use
I got this elite drive on Black Friday from BestBuy. I tried to backup my laptop’s C-drive. After 2 days of trying it only backed up 2.2GB. So annoying that I do not think it can be of any use for backing up. Will be returning soon.

speed makes it worthless
I might have received a defective one but if not, this drive is so slow it’s useless. After over 8 hours of trying to transfer 400GB it still wasn’t done!! (a lot of memory but that’s just unacceptable). It’s going back.

Ok for some
I bought this and returned it within 24 hours of receiving it. The product is ok, but I had some problems installing it. Some of these were my mistakes, but I blame them because it camw with no documentaion or cloning software. I had the right SATA connectors on my MB and the right plugs on my power supply. but I had to clone an EIDE (PATA) drive to it and there was no software like Seagate provides to do this. Also no instructions. I had a 2000 version of Norton Ghost and used it. It did the cloning, but without proper instructions, I booted up on the new disk without physically disconnecting the old drive and got the drives cross-linked. I managed to salvage the old drive and redid the process correctly, but my old chipset couldn’t handle the size of this drive with one partition. It ran slow and sluggish. I gave up and returned it. Fortunatly I bought it from Amazon directly and they have an amazing return policy. Now, even if I by from the Amazon site, I always check to make sure it is sold and shipped by Amazon. If it isn’t, I don’t buy it.

Excellent, extremely quiet drive
I bought four of these drives as additional volumes for four Dell PCs after reading customer reviews, some of which mentioned how quiet the drives are. It true. I could barely hear the drives operating while I was formatting them – and that’s with the cover off the PC’s. Gives you the perception that they’re precisely designed, machined and aligned drives. Smoothest running drives I’ve ever used.

NOT the retail version with cable, software, etc.
I have not even installed this yet and I’m angry already. I’ve had good experiences with WD drives so I expect this one will be fine. What I’m NOT fine with is the fact that the retail package does NOT come with the cable and utility software. I could have bought the OEM version cheaper elsewhere.

Will never buy WD again
Paid $116 for this hard drive in March of 2008. August of 2009 it is dead in the water. This is the third WD hard drive that has failed in under 2 years. WD would not replace under warranty. My other hardware checks out fine. Definitely a HD failure. So long WD!

Best thing short of SSD out there!
I had a pair of WD 1600 Raptors in Raid 0 on a Dell Dimension 710. When one failed I bought a pair of these hoping to get a modest improvement in speed as well as storage space. I was concerned about noise, as some reviewers have complained about these being noisy. However, compared to my previous hard drives, these are much quieter and noticeably faster. Running in Raid 0 I got HD Tune 2.55 results of:

Install was a snap and I am very pleased with these hard drives.

Awesome speed for games
First of all, let me start by saying that this is a gamer’s hard drive. If you’re not playing games, there’s very few other applications that warrant the extra cost for a bit more speed over modern large-cache 7200 RPM drives. Nowadays, your hard drive is practically guaranteed to be the bottleneck in your system. If you run apps that do frequent reads and writes it’s going to be a major bottleneck indeed.

First off, a general breakdown on this drive. It is 279 GB after formatting (don’t freak out, that’s normal). It sports a 16 MB cache, which was crazy when it first came out but now is actually pretty average. It’s 10,000 RPM and clearly has fine-tuned mechanics, which primarily accounts for its very low seek/read/write times. The drive is a 2.5″ but comes with a built-in (and not removable) mount and heatsink that makes it a 3.5″ which is standard for most desktop internal drives. It’s a 300 GB drive according to spec- I’m not sure why it says 250 in the description above, but this drive only comes in 150 and 300 GB versions, and from the cost it’s obviously the latter. It works perfectly fine with Windows 7, Linux, etc. if this wasn’t obvious (not sure why they even mention OS compatibility in the specs).

The drive is very quiet and uses remarkably low power for a 10k RPM. This is pretty much the best drive in its class available anywhere- there were some competitors but they seem to have given up and focused on solid state disks (SSDs) instead. If you want the fastest conventional hard drive available, with very high reliability and decent capacity, look no further. Especially in RAID, this thing just smokes any other setup. You can expect games to load data at least twice as fast as they would with a vanilla 7200 RPM.

Now, the question everyone that’s still reading this must be asking: if you’re going to pay this much for a hard drive (cost per storage, it’s at least 5 times the cost of a high-end 7200 RPM), why not just get an SSD instead? The answer is actually pretty simple: SSDs are still way too primitive and expensive. A VelociRaptor is actually a bit faster than low end SSDs and it’s proven technology that you can expect to work for the full 5 year warranty coverage, if not longer. SSDs are relatively new to market and- as with all other flash-based tech- have limited write/rewrites that can cause problems down the road. They also don’t generally perform well with the SATA interface which is what almost all motherboards still use. If you want the fast loads for gaming, this drive is clearly a better choice than an SSD unless you only play one or two games. How many games are you going to fit on a 64 GB SSD (which is, by the way, more expensive)? Nowadays you’d be lucky to fit 5 on there besides Windows.

If you’re willing to shell out the extra money for the fastest hard drive available, this is it. You’ll be amazed how fast it installs stuff and loads data. If you’re on a budget or don’t consider yourself an enthusiast, go for a lower-priced 7200 with a 32 MB cache.

FAST, and I mean FAST!
I love this drive, Fast, quiet, low surface temp. Solid and reliable performance.

It’s a great buy for those who require fast transfer rates and low latencies, it does make my computer feel faster. OS and progs take several seconds less to load, and a user immediately senses the difference.

Awesome hard drive, but watch your budget.

Amazing Product
very nice design, solid, very fast drive and silent even with the PowerMac aluminun case, you will hear it working but nothing extreme, as a boot drive is fast and stable, i never try it as a storage or raid, the package is very simple as every OEM product, came only with a brown box with some cushion paper, invoice and the drive nothing fancy.

the price in amazon is the cheaper i could find around online, i went to bestbuy and frys just to compare the prices they want between 399 to 439 plus tax and a 2 weeks waiting to order and 5 more days to pick up LOL!!!!.

Western Digital Hard Drive
I can not comment much on this product because I was sent a Seagate Cheetah instead, but Amazon was nice enough to take it back and is sending the right order. I have purchased this same model before and it works great. There was some small problems but now it works and it is very fast.

How could I be so unlucky?
I had to get my internal hdd replaced and was given this. Within 2 weeks it was giving me a message about smart failure. So I had it replaced. Four months later, I’m getting smart failure messages again. What’s up with that. I don’t know if WD will replace it for me, but I guess I’ll have to call and check.

(I also had to pay a *lot* more for mine….)

On the other hand, the current price is nice. I’m not a high-level user, but I was able to reformat and partition it with Paragon while preserving all the files on it (I hadn’t been able to do with with my WD Passport portable, so I guess it counts for something). Aside from the smart failure, there’s nothing really objectionable about it that I can detect. But the smart failure is pretty big, I’d think.

Great for backups
As I add more data to my computer than can fit onto a DVD, I opted for this hard drive to create a backup for all my files – iTunes, photos, etc – just in case something horrible goes wrong with my main system. I just plug it in, and there it is – I do a manual backup (yes I’m old-fashioned) then it gets ejected and put away until the next time I need to do a backup. Compact and easy to use.

Love this little HD!
We bought this sometime in the spring of 2009. It has been reliable and solid since then, and so far I have no complaints. I would recommend this to someone looking for a small, inexpensive HD.

Loved it while it worked
Stopped working after a few months. Now it sometimes works and other times doesn’t. Not reliable.

I love the design of this, and it works perfectly (I use it as a Time Machine backup) But the plastic sliding cover doesn’t click in place and leaves the port exposed. Just a minor thing, and may be fixed on the next product run. I still recommend this product

Western Digital My Passport
No technical jibber jabber here. It’s simple. I plug the passport into a usb port on my laptop. I move video files, pictures, audio files into separate folders I’ve created labeled ‘video’, ‘picture’, and ‘audio’. For the better part, the moves are quick and effortless. Actually, always effortless. ‘Quick’ depends on the size of the file. A standard movie takes about 1 minute to move to the passport from the computer. To watch a movie, I plug my passport into my laptop, my laptop into my tv, start the 100% non-copyrighted movie I choose, make it full screen, and I’m all set. The passport has replaced a wall of video tapes, cds, dvds, and photo albums. It’s so easy to use, that I actually feel bad for anyone that has trouble figuring it out. Sorry if that’s you, but that’s the truth. It’s very small and it requires no electrical outlet. It is one little piece of equipment, with one cord. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

I ordered this six weeks ago. After 4 weeks I started sending emails asking where in the hell it was and was told that it is listed as shipping in 1 – 4 weeks and should be with me shortly. Then a week later I got an email saying it was delayed even longer and would not even be here in another month so I am canceling the order and need to find another drive. I am appalled and disappointed. TERRIBLE service.

A good drive but AMAZON keeps raising the price on this item once it’s in the wishlist so I will spend the extra money and buy a better drive somewhere else, real smart AMAZON great way to lose a sale.

extremely pleased
I’ve only found one drawback to this product–it would take less space if it could stand on its side. It’s incredibly fast, quiet, and is a true plug and play. I’ve only had it for about a month but so far it’s been reliable. It’s my second Western Digital external hard drive and I’m a big fan of theirs.

Good, Sound Hard Drive
First let me say, if you’re looking for a hard drive that looks durable, this is a great choice for you. I was looking for an external drive with a good price and a lot of storage. While typically I go for portable hard drives, this one caught my eye, and I must say I’m happy with the purchase. It’s whisper quiet (I don’t think I’ve heard a sound from it yet). Quick install, and good data transfer time. If I ever fill this one up, I’ll probably buy another to match.

Great drive as long as you know what an OEM product means
This drive is probably not for you if you have no idea what Bulk/OEM means in the product title. It means that you’ll receive just the hard drive in a plain cardboard box – no fancy packaging, no manual, no screws and NO CABLES whatsoever. You can save a few bucks by getting this packaging if you are assembling your own machine (in which case the motherboard and power unit likely include the necessary cables), or if you are replacing a SATA drive. If you are adding a drive to your Dell or HP or whatever branded machine, you will likely need to buy a SATA data cable and possibly a SATA-IDE adapter power cable.

For me the drive works great out of the box. It’s a fast and moderately spacious drive at bargain basement price.

great hard drive
The drive works great. I’ve had no problems so far as I’ve read others have in other reviews. I use it with my Mac (FW 800 connection), but I don’t use it with Time Machine. I also don’t let the drive sleep and wake with my computer. I keep it turned off when I’m not using it. I don’t know if that increases the odds of a problem free experience, but from what I hear from others, it might.

Good, but a little too costly
The Western Digital line of hard drives is remarkably quiet and physically beautiful, and the one we just bought has a five-year warranty, which was the deciding factor.

Awesome Device
Works great, I’m very happy with my purchase. My only issue is its a little noisy when sitting next to a whisper quiet Mac. And once after I set it up it froze and didn’t auto back up for days, I fixed it by rebooting it and it has worked well since. I recommend it to anyone who wants to pair it up with the Apple Time Machine program.

Great Video Storage Device
I do a lot of video editing and this is one of several WD multi-interface external drives used with my iMac. All three of the WD external drives and my camcorder’s DV output jack are daisy chained to my computer via the FireWire 800 interface. Installing this drive couldn’t have been easier. Plugged in the power, attached the provided IEEE cables to my other externals, and my iMac immediately recognized the drive. Works great and am very pleased with its size and virtually noiseless operation.

Huge, quick, quiet drive, but a little hot
The MyBook Studio Edition 750gb is a heck of a drive. More storage than I (literally) know what to do with. It’s quiet, and really fast, with plenty of connection options. USB 2.0, the old standby, is quite fast; eSATA, an emerging standard for external drives at internal hard drive speeds; and FireWire 800, a rather obscure but welcome standard that makes USB 2.0 seem “slow” by comparison. You should, of course, use the fastest interface your computer supports (eSATA, then Firewire, then USB if nothing else is available).

It’s a very quiet drive, almost entirely inaudible. Inside the case is a Western Digital GreenPower 750gb SATA II hard drive, which is the quietest, most efficient hard drive WD has to offer. It runs on a small “wall wart” power adapter at 12Vdc.

My only concern with this drive is that it gets quite warm on top after hours of continuous use (e.g. slowly reading video data as it encodes). I’ve placed mine on a laptop cooling pad, which draws some moving air through the case (which has many cooling holes, but apparently not quite enough) and keeps it ice cool. Cooling has always been a concern with Western Digital external drives, and they seem to have never fixed that design flaw (although I think some MyBook models had fans?). There’s also a slight concern regarding the LED patterns: after the drive is idle, it should enter a “sleep” mode, where the indicator LED starts to pulse slowly. On mine, it does that for a while before it stops pulsing and stays on full brightness for no good reason. Not sure what it’s indicating, but in a dark room (like a bedroom) it can get almost distracting. The LED lightshow while it’s in operation is quite entertaining, and the white LEDs are beautiful against the silver case finish.

Overall I’d say it’s a very, very good hard drive for someone with hungry storage needs. It can store over a hundred full DVDs or almost 175 4.7gb DVDs. It also works great as a backup drive to be used in conjunction with image-based backup solutions like Ghost or True Image.
