Adequate for what I need
Bought it for home use. Already have a traveling Seagate Free Agent drive, so mainly was looking for a way to share video/music files among computers on my home network. I realize it does not provide RAID capability, but does what I need it to well enough until I am ready to upgrade.

Drive fairly easy to set up, although took some fussing with my router and each computer to get it reliably assigned same drive letter and always found upon bootup. I suspect this is more as issue with my router, which is getting rather long in the tooth and as a SMC product I have had to deal with its idiosynchrosies often enough in the past, especially when having to negotiate firewall and port problems.

Great little drive!
The setup for this drive was a snap. It is pretty much plug and play. If you already know how to map a network drive, you don’t even need the provided setup CD. We have MAC address filtering enabled on our router so we had an extra step. My only complaint so far is the MAC Address on the bottom of the device is teeny tiny! My husband and I both had a hard time reading it. So far transfer speeds are great. We’re only using it for data storage so I can’t comment on the media features. We have other WD drives and love them. We have never had a single issue.

No Long File Names Allowed
I have a lot of pictures very well organized on my hard drives (multiple) and the item does not back up my pictures.

Here is the error: The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters

So, if you shove everything into 1 directory with no organization then this is for you otherwise, don’t get it. Now, let’s see if they take it back…..doubt it! Very disappointing.

very quiet when operating, silent in standby mode; easy install
this was cheaper than buying time capsule and works just fine. All my Macs can use time capsule to backup their computers to this network drive.

I hate noise and this drive is fantastic. Like the other My Book drives, when not it use it spins down the drive so there is absolutely no noise most all the time.

I think the transfer rate is a bit on the slow side, but other than that, it works well.

Works beautifully in the background
Set up was the only reservation I have with this product. Once set up, it works beautifully. Set up wasn’t difficult, but I wouldn’t call it simple either.

Won’t clone
Usually WD drives are good. Gave this drive as a gift to my sister to increase her laptop space. Can’t clone another drive onto this one. So this is a door stopper. Need to return to WD.

Quiet, Fast and Reliable
I bought this drive to put in an external enclosure several months ago and it’s working like a champ. It’s quiet, fast and reliable. What more can you ask of a hard drive.

EZ Upgrade
I got an iPod for father’s day and was already pushing the limit of my 54GB hard drive. Bought the 120GB PATA since Dell said 120 was the biggest I could use. Got an Apricorn EZ Upgrade Kit which will work for PATA or SATA. I downloaded the clone software from Western Digital since I read a good review of it. I assume the Apricorn would have been OK too. I was up and running in less than an hour. The only scare I had was pulling out the old drive and not seeing the pins on back like the new drive had. After a few seconds I realized that the old drive had an addapter on it that just pulled off and pushed on to the new drive.

Amazon does it again!
I have always had great service from Western Digital drives. This one is the same. It was easy to find on Amazon and the price was the cheapest, by far. Delivery was quick even though I used standard free shipping!!

This was a gift, I installed in my daughter’s computer. She is happy with the added capacity & it has been performing flawlessly.

Great expansion solution
I bought this 1TB Western Digital drive about two weeks ago and so far so good. Installation went smoothly although it took about half an hour before the TiVo was back up and running. Based on other reviews about the ESata cable I bought a third party cable that did appear to be of better quality than the one supplied with the drive. There is some incorrect information out there that says you only get 120 hours of HD recoding capacity but you actually get 160 hours of HD capacity. This may vary based on the recording quality you set on your TiVo. I love all the additional space and so far it is working great.

Quick to install, does what it says
Not hard at all on the installation, although I had to reboot the Tivo a couple times. All in all, it over triples my functional memory for a reasonable price.

What all HD TiVo owners need
There’s not a lot to say about a product with so little functionality. Turn off your TiVo, plug it in, turn it back on, TiVo will ask whether to format it, and “boom,” you have a huge amount of capacity for recordings. Then it just sits there, glowing amber and doing its job.

I will say that the instructions are quite clear, the packaging is non-obnoxious, and the product is pretty cool looking in the entertainment center. Definitely recommended.

You will be one of those people… Don’t be fooled.
Using Windows 7 (WD website says it’s compatible), HP Pavillion Elite e9270t, using Firewire 800 connection… Installation – horrific. I must have tried 10 different things just to get the WD Drive Manager installed. Copying files from another external drive connected usb 2.0 to this new WD Studio Edition II has been extremely painful. Every minute or so, the drive status from WD Drive Manager states “Devise not found”. Meanwhile, my computer is hung (not CPU or memory constrained either). After copying most of my stuff over I copied it back b/c I don’t trust this drive. Emailed support a few days ago and do not have a response. I have gotten the blue screen a couple times and severe window issues trying to restart since installing this and attempting to copy data back and forth. I am 8 out of 10 in terms of computer knowledge, so don’t think you won’t be one of the lucky ones – if you are, make sure you back this drive up elsewhere. I have lost days of my time due to this drive. Wait until they improve the technology.

Terrible drive
Are you a windows user? If so, this is NOT the drive for you. Installation is tough. The installation software doesn’t work in Vista. You will need to go into the disk tools within the system admin section and create the drive. Not only does the ssoftware not work, but the Firewire 400/800 connection doesn’t work. You’ll need to use the USB 2.0 port. Don’t waster your time and money with this drive.

Works Well – But I Had To Replace A Drive After One Year
I bought this 2 TB drive about 18 months ago for my Mac Pro and about 6 months ago one of the drives began to fail. I tried reformatting and repairing the drive but no luck – it seemed to work on and off for a while but totally stopped about a month ago. It was a little difficult determining which drive failed but by putting the drives directly into my Mac Pro I was able to isolate which drive was faulty. I have now bought a new WD Green drive and swapped it out and now everything is as new again. I hope this is not a indicator of the life expectancy of these WD Green drives as they generally get good reviews. For now I have a working back-up solution again – so as long as I don’t loose another drive I will be marginally happy.

Otherwise the drive is quite and it does work well with Time Machine. I use the drive with the USB port as this is fast enough for my purposes.

Couldn’t be happier!
I love this new 4TB hard drive. It is very easy to use, has all the connections I could want and transfers data very fast (Using Firewire 800 connection). Truly a plug and play item for my mac, plus it has the full 4TB of storage, unlike certain external hard drives of the past. And being able to daisy chain this with my other firewire drives is great. Can’t wait to get my second one!

Bought for the PS3
I bought this item for my PS3 40gb when i purchased it back in 2008 and it was a great investment. It was a great value for the price I paid for the item. It was a breeze to upgrade the HDD, easy swap and format for the PS3. (It it noted that this was for the original (phat PS3)). I have recently upgraded to the PS3 Slim which contains a 120gb HDD. They release a 250GB recently, but I would advise to just upgrade the HDD yourself, it is cheaper and not that hard to upgrade.

Good HD
This hard drive is great because of it’s compatibility. It is used with a laptop, ps3, or an xbox 360. Western Digital is a reliable manufacturer. My last hd was western digital but it became corrupt so I decided to upgrade. It works fine, and Amazon shipped it fast.

Garbage
I bought this to replace my old laptop hard drive in April. It died in September, so it couldn’t even survive half a year. What a piece of work. I lost all of my notes and everything. My old 2003 internal hard drive that came with my Dell laptop still works, as well as my aging hard drive from about 5 years ago. And yet this thing, whatever you want to call it, couldn’t last half a year. I will not be buying a WD product again. I suggest you do the same.

WD 160GB Hard Drive
This hard drive was perfect for my situation. My Dell’s hard drive decided to fail on me and I couldn’t get it working again, so I bought this. Installation was easy, I was able to reinstall Windows in no time.

It was also a great deal; the 80GB hard drive from Dell, which I originally had, was around $100, so this was worth it; twice the space for half the price.

Good stuff
It worked plug and play with my mac system. However, documentation was limited for the more advanced features. Still, so far.. so good.

Negative Reviews Are Not Right
This is a very good solid NAS (Network Attached Storage)

I will address the negatives as most are wrong.

Lack of Documentation? Is wrong. There is a 100 page manual on the CD and there is exceptional contextual help when you connect to the NAS with a web browser.

Poor performance? Is wrong. This is a NAS device not an internal drive. For me it writes at about 100 mbs and reads at about 230 mbs. It is common knowledge that to get the protection of RAID 5 you must give up some write performance.

You can see each others files? This is wrong. If you use a web browser to the NAS and create users you can then map drives as that user. Each user has there own file space and you can even limit their disk quota.

The backup software is poor? This is wrong. I am using it for 300 GB backups and I can select what files or drives I want. The really cool thing is that once your first backup is done it only backs up the files AS YOU SAVE THEM so you NEVER have to do a long backup again. Also you can get as many copies of a file you want so if you delete or mangle a file you can retrieve whatever version you like. Sorry kids, but this feature totally ROCKS!

Web interface is slow? Not on my system.

Too slow for a video server? This is wrong. Max video (uncompressed Blue Ray) is 25 mbs. The one person is trying to use his RAID 5 backup drive for video editing? Usually you use RAID 1 for that. And I have never heard of anyone using ‘Network’ attached storage for editing, only directly connect drives. Even a full Gigabit network is too slow for that.

All that said, it is usefull to have knowledge of either Windows file share using the ‘connect as’ feature or knowledge of Linux if you want to connect a Mac or do ftp backups. This isn’t a toy.

A Lot of Storage, Some Bugs to Fix
Received the 4TB from Amazon. Good price, good shipping. It came as it declared in the description.

I’ve had the Sharespace for a month now and experienced nothing major. Used it out of the box in its default RAID 5.

Comes ready to share files! It comes ready share media (iTunes, etc.). I also had no issues with connecting and streaming with my XBox 360. However, in my experience with iTunes sharing, I had to turn off iTunes sharing and then turn it back on in order for it to work.

By that I mean, when trying to connect to the WD Sharespace iTunes, iTunes on my MacBook Pro gives an error like, “Cannot connect to WD Sharespace. Make sure your computer or the WD Sharespace is configured to have port 3689 open.” By default, the newer Macs have this port and a few others open by default when you have your firewall open. If it is not, you can specify.

So I log in to the Sharespace, turn it off and then on again and it works. Strange. I emailed Tech Support explaining my error message (I was not rude or angry) and got an immediate, if not almost useless reply. I replied back but haven’t heard back.

Logging in as Admin using the GUI is easy, and it’s easy to use once you’re in. FTP is a snap, and the other features are good.

Sweet
Needed more space for pictures and family videos. This thing works as advertised. Plugged it into power and network. Software that came with it works very nicely. Surely, not inexpensive, but if this size of storage is what you need, then this product will not disappoint.

Didn’t get this product, they sent me a different model Linksys 2 bay as a replacement that doesn’t do what this product does they said that they didn’t carry this product and opted to send a replacement which was not even half as good as the product ordered. buyer beware of what you are ordering they do send cheaper replacements.

Happy… Ship UPS please!
It’s very small… my WD drive and my Ipod touch fit great in here. It has a soft lining and is well constructed with a USB cord puch in the front.

My only gripe is they sent it USPS when I ordered two day service… USPS takes forever, please go UPS, DHL, or another company that actually delivers in a timley fasion.

Good quality, does what it’s suppose to do
I use it to protect my WD Passport external HD – works well. The price is fair.

Not at all built for WD 2.5″ Drive.
I bought 3 of these thinking they would be a nice sleeve for my assorted colored hard drives. Boy was I wrong

1. they are WAY too big for 2.5″ WD hard drives. The hard drive is not at all protected sliding around in this case. My hard drives are already scratched.

2. Basically these are poorly made knockoffs from the REAL WD sleeves. They are WAY too big, zippers and pockets are poorly constructed.

3. Cheap packaging.

4. Do not recommend.

Great Carrying Case
This neoprene sleeve really protects the Western Digital Passport. All the things that you need fit inside and the strap makes it easy to carry. I love the color too

I love this little case. Best thing about it: It’s RED. I love the color selection so that you can express yourself. It holds my 320G Western Digital Passport perfectly….also has an outside pouch that holds the usb cord and also my little bluetooth adapter for my blackberry! VelociRip
Windows rated my system 5.2 because of the low data transfer rate of my hard drive. I purchased the VelociRaptor because of the 10,0000 RPM speed and 16 MB Cache. Windows now rates my system at 5.9 citing the low disk transfer rate of my hard drive. Not much of an improvement.

Super – Fast and Quiet, too !!
After reading many customer reviews and noticing the several complaints about NOISE from this drive, I was very hesitant to spring for the big bucks — BUT, after throwing caution to the wind, I decided to go for the BIG SPEED anyways.

I’m glad I gambled, ’cause this 150-GB drive is lightning-fast — and MUCH more quiet than either my 160 GB, 7200 rpm Samsung or my 500 GB, 7200 rpm Seagate !!

I installed the 10k ‘Raptor into my rig, threw the switch, and loaded LINUX in there — and was on-line in less than 8 minutes !!

I’ve run the system for several days now, and can’t find anything wrong — the lightweight ‘Raptor runs super-fast, it’s VERY quiet, and that huge heat-sink keeps it cool — like that proverbial cucumber !!

Currently, I have 5 different hard-drives in use, and the 10k Velociraptor is the very best in every way !!

VelociRaptor is superb
Although the cost per GB is higher than standard 7200RPM 8MB drives, this drive gives superior performance. The “seat-of-the-pants” feel of how the drive works is crispy with very little latency. 3 difference HD performance testing softwares show that this drive is almost twice as fast as 7200RPM/8MB drive. I’m going to buy the 320GB Velociraptor next.

Fast, quiet, great drive
I’m using the VelociRaptor as the OS drive in my media center/file server machine. Since switching from an older 120GB WD drive to this drive, the machine is much more responsive and snappy. I’m super happy with this device. It strikes a great balance between performance and cost given the current prices of SSDs. If you need a faster OS drive but don’t want to shell out the money for a SSD right now, this is a wonderful alternative.

very cool compared to my older raptor
Works great and fast for quick boots on my desktop. The only thing I want to note is that it’s very cool to the touch compared to my old raptor. Great drive for a great price
I installed this as an upgrade for my Dell laptop about a year ago and it has been great and flawless every since. A great drive for a great price.

Great drive!
I bought this as an internal storage for my RCA L10T media player. Use this player almost daily and sometimes leaving it on for days (forgot to turn it off). It is quiet in the environment it is in (next to TV, DVD players, DVRs, etc) even when everything else is turned off. It does heat up a little, but that’s probably because the media player doesn’t have internal cooling fans. The drive has been quite reliable for the last 3 months I’ve been using it. It has been great so far.

Used for PS3 upgrade!
I bought this to replace my 40 GIG hard drive in my PS3. With all the games on the PS3 we began getting the message that we were running low on space. My son is the one who suggested this HD. To think I was actually considering buying a new PS3 for more space. Very well priced and easy to install! It fits very well into the HD bay on the PS3. Highly recommended for those that are going to upgrade their PS3.

Great PS3 upgrade
I purchased the 500 GB drive to replace the 80 gig in my PS3. It went in fine, and works perfectly, and has a massive amount of storage at a fair price. I’d definitely recommend this product to upgrade a ps3.

An excellent HDD at an amzing price!
I bought this as an upgrade for my wife’s Dell GX260 Slim Tower’s 40 GB drive.

I was skeptical when I saw the price, but after two weeks of using it, I must confess that I am amazed at the deal we made.

The drive works perfectly with no bad sectors. I simply switched drives, installed the OS and we were off with no problems.

Hard Drive Review
The hard drive was shipped in a flimsy shipping bag. There was absolutely no support to guarentee that if the package was dropped that the hard drive would be ok. The corner of the hardrive was broken and am still in the process of trying to get it to work. If no luck by the end of the week I will be asking for a refund on my money.

Working Great
It’s been like a month since I got it and it is working just fine.

Even though the package just comes with the HD, it has the diagram to set the jumper as master, slave or master with slave. Set it up to master with slave installed Linux in it and I have now two HD up and running.

Died after 14 months
This drive died after 14 months of usage. Began with a clicking noise before it died so at least I had some warning of the impending failure to perform backups.

Alright!!
This drive was very easy to put in the computer. My HP found it immediately, and it sort of installed by itself. It wasn’t showing up but I didn’t switch the jumper for it to be a slave drive . Once we did that, I had to install it with this program:

Once I did that very easily and quickly, my new, big (for an older type of drive), and speedy drive was ready to go! I’m currently moving stuff from my 40GB to it, so I can boot, and overall run faster. 5 stars, other than the documentation! That, and other stuff for the drive, can be found online.

Died after 3 weeks
I used this drive as an external backup inside a Star Tech USB enclosure. After backing up files, installing UBUNTU (just in case my main drive failed I could boot this one up and have access to my files) and after spending a long time organizing those files, I set it aside. I should say it lasted less than three weeks because I barely used it at all after doing the backups. Three weeks later I went to do some more backups and the drive was no longer recognized. I tried plugging it into a different computer – no luck. I put different hard drives into the enclosure and they read just fine. At one point it did read for about 2 minutes and then went dead again. This is the second 500gig drive that died on me this year (the other was a Seagate). I’m awaiting a new drive, but I don’t have very high hopes.

I have had many drives, but wd is for me the most reliable.

Quiet, not as fast as my other drives, but there is a lot more storeage

capability at 1/3rd the price of the other drives.

Great OEM Hard Drive!
As is usual with Western Digital products, this is an excellent hard drive. I use this in my D-Link NAS-323 backup device, and it works great.

It’s a no frills drive, but is fast and would be a great purchase for anyone looking for a new SATA hard drive.

Be sure to register the drive at Western Digital’s website, so you can take advantage of the warranty and software options(you can download utilities and backup software from their site, for free).

Puts first generation Raptors to shame!
This drive is very quick. Windows 7 boots very quickly and tasks are executed promptly. This stomps my old first generation raptor to the ground. Read and Write speeds average around 100MBps, with peaks in the 130’s.

320GB per platter means faster than 250GB platter drives because of higher density. More data is squeezed into the same space therefore the heads don’t have to travel as far when seeking and accessing.

These 320GB per platter Western Digital drives and the new 500GB per platter Samsung F3 series are the only drives I’d buy at the moment.

Good stuff. For any moderate to high demanding system though I’d always recommend at least two drives. The operating systems needs a dedicated drive all to itself, and your files need their own drive or drives. Working in this way makes leaps and bounds in performance difference even if it’s just using two standalone HDD’s without any kind of raid. This matters mostly of course if you have very many files, (pics, videos, music, etc.)

Never buy Maxtor which fails quite a bit. Western Digital has been very reliable. I use this one at work in my file server for ghost imaging. great product. highly recommended.
