Excellent Hard Disk – compact and easy to use!
The product I bought (Western Digital 400GB External Hard drive) from Outlet is very good. I got it in a neatly packaged box – it showed how they cared for their customers. I was periodically notified regarding the status of payment, shipping and billing – which shows they are loyal to their customers. I also read good reviews and noticed good ratings for them from other users – which means they are quite truthful and already possess many satisfied customers before me. As a normal customer, I look for a good and competitive price, new piece, regular communication as it’s an online purchase, security among other parameters and I was clearly satisfied with all of these. Thanks to Amazon, Outlet and other officers whom I do not know but have helped me receive this product.

The product was also in a good shape – it works really well; just plug and play. No hassles, has password protection if required. The USB cable could’ve been much more longer, but it’s still long enough while using with a laptop; if used with a Desktop PC where the USB cable is especially available behind the CPU only, then the length of the USB cable is a serious problem.

Overall, I got a good deal, I still have not come across such a price for a new product with the red colour in other online stores or direct shops.

Arun

It`s simply fantastic
I use it every day without problems. I really like appearance and size, fits any PC and laptop. I take with me to college parties and you can watch movies with him. Recommended

Happy… Ship UPS please!
It’s very small… my WD drive and my Ipod touch fit great in here. It has a soft lining and is well constructed with a USB cord puch in the front.

My only gripe is they sent it USPS when I ordered two day service… USPS takes forever, please go UPS, DHL, or another company that actually delivers in a timley fasion.

Good quality, does what it’s suppose to do
I use it to protect my WD Passport external HD – works well. The price is fair.

Not at all built for WD 2.5″ Drive.
I bought 3 of these thinking they would be a nice sleeve for my assorted colored hard drives. Boy was I wrong

1. they are WAY too big for 2.5″ WD hard drives. The hard drive is not at all protected sliding around in this case. My hard drives are already scratched.

2. Basically these are poorly made knockoffs from the REAL WD sleeves. They are WAY too big, zippers and pockets are poorly constructed.

3. Cheap packaging.

4. Do not recommend.

Great Carrying Case
This neoprene sleeve really protects the Western Digital Passport. All the things that you need fit inside and the strap makes it easy to carry. I love the color too

Sweet little package
I love this little case. Best thing about it: It’s RED. I love the color selection so that you can express yourself. It holds my 320G Western Digital Passport perfectly….also has an outside pouch that holds the usb cord and also my little bluetooth adapter for my blackberry! Perfect to fit inside my book bag, etc. I love it.

Was solid for a year
Drive worked pretty flawlessly for a little over 1 year, used on a daily basis, and avoided moving it around to prevent damage to the drive while it was in operation. However, one day when I turned on my computer, it had difficulty detecting the drive. I was able to create a connection, and load up my music, which would play through a random amount of music, and then freeze up. Further investigation revealed a hideous amount of bad sectors, (well over 200,000!) which is a ridiculous number to get overnight. Not sure what caused the problem, but I will be sending in for a replacement unit from WD, as it is apparently still under warranty. As a side note, my unit was purchased from Circuit City, August 2008. I will report on the second drive if it encounters similar problems.

Love, Love, Love this device!
I use this system in my house with either a mac of Windows, I use it in both of them and it works great, I do really have not complaints about this device…

I use it on my mac with the firewire and in the PC with the USB. Every easy to use and install…

sure buy!

Unreliable
This is my second, and last, Western Digital “home” external hard drive. The first one failed just after the warranty ended. For some reason, probably shortsighted cheapness, I went to [...] and bought the new “improved” model. It has just failed — after one year of service. Fortunately it has a three year warranty and WD is sending me a replacement, but I have so little confidence in their external consumer-level drives at this point that I doubt I’ll be storing any important data on it. My recommendation is stay away from these WD external drives. They’re cheap, and you get what you pay for (not much).

Beware the Click of Death !
I bought this drive as a file back-up unit about 2.5 years ago. It worked fine until last week when I heard a clicking noise when it powered up and it failed to properly initialize. A quick search of the web proved that this is apparently a common problem for this drive and it signifies a drive failure. Now, my only option to retrieve my data is an expensive data extraction by Western Digital.

I think they spent too much money on exterior design and not enough on reliability ! I would gladly trade the look of this drive for one that doesn’t fail. A responsible manufacturer would recall a product with a failure rate this high or at least warn their customers that they need to back-up their back-up before it fails.

Not sure what I am buying to replace this but it won’t be a Western Digital external drive. I think I will pick out the ugliest one from now on since it means they are spending their resources on the inside where it counts.

Failed after 8 months- lost everything
The hard drive was terrible. I used it very lightly for about 8 months and then it started making a clicking noise and failed. I lost a lot of sentimental and important data. I couldn’t be more dissatisfied with WD.

Great for backups
As I add more data to my computer than can fit onto a DVD, I opted for this hard drive to create a backup for all my files – iTunes, photos, etc – just in case something horrible goes wrong with my main system. I just plug it in, and there it is – I do a manual backup (yes I’m old-fashioned) then it gets ejected and put away until the next time I need to do a backup. Compact and easy to use.

Love this little HD!
We bought this sometime in the spring of 2009. It has been reliable and solid since then, and so far I have no complaints. I would recommend this to someone looking for a small, inexpensive HD.

Loved it while it worked
Stopped working after a few months. Now it sometimes works and other times doesn’t. Not reliable.

works great… But
I love the design of this, and it works perfectly (I use it as a Time Machine backup) But the plastic sliding cover doesn’t click in place and leaves the port exposed. Just a minor thing, and may be fixed on the next product run. I still recommend this product

Western Digital My Passport
No technical jibber jabber here. It’s simple. I plug the passport into a usb port on my laptop. I move video files, pictures, audio files into separate folders I’ve created labeled ‘video’, ‘picture’, and ‘audio’. For the better part, the moves are quick and effortless. Actually, always effortless. ‘Quick’ depends on the size of the file. A standard movie takes about 1 minute to move to the passport from the computer. To watch a movie, I plug my passport into my laptop, my laptop into my tv, start the 100% non-copyrighted movie I choose, make it full screen, and I’m all set. The passport has replaced a wall of video tapes, cds, dvds, and photo albums. It’s so easy to use, that I actually feel bad for anyone that has trouble figuring it out. Sorry if that’s you, but that’s the truth. It’s very small and it requires no electrical outlet. It is one little piece of equipment, with one cord. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

Worked for a while, less than a year though
I guess for 65 bucks, getting almost a year (11 months 10 days) out of the drive isn’t too bad. I upgraded my TivoHD when its hard drive went out after 2 years of operation. Considering that this drive was developed to operate continuously for media operations, I consider it failed for only lasting 1 year.

Excellent upgrade for my TivoHD
This is a SATA II drive and works very nicely with my TivoHD. After replacing the original drive with this one, my tivo now draws 2-3 watts less and runs a degree or two cooler (that’s tougher to get good data on though).

Prior to installing in my tivo I ran some performance tests and almost kept it for my PC since it was sustaining better throughput than my 160 gig maxtor. Sitting at my desk while running the tests I had to pick the drive up to hear it.

Between the efficient power, excellent sustained throughput, nearly silent seek/writes and ~60 dollar price tag (with free shipping!) who wouldn’t want one?

Nice drive, quiet drive
Arrived quick, too! I bought this as a replacement for my dead Tivo drive. Now I can no longer hear my Tivo in the living room (OK, maybe the fan if I concentrate, but the ticky-ticky of drive access is gone. Going from 80GB to 500GB for $60 is incredible (and for $100 at the time I got this, a 1TB drive was almost irresistible–but I had to admit I would probably never use that much extra storage and I really wanted to revive the Tivo for as little $ as possible.)

I did not pay attention to the fact this is a PATA drive, and my Tivo only has a SATA cable. A Tivo community forum recommended this exact drive and I just went with it. You might have same issue if your PC only has traditional SATA cables and interfaces. I found a SATA-PATA adapter for $6 on Ebay and it worked great.

Portable back-up hard drive
This works well and automatically backs up all files on my computer. However, it takes control of the computer when the PC reboots, and slows response time for up to 4 minutes.

5 Year warranty to boot!!
I don’t use the gauge, nor any of the software. But for the extra $20 I’d rather have the 5 year warranty that comes with the elite drives (opposed to 3 yr for standard passport drives). I have important stuff on my drives (I have 3 of them) and I’m assuming there using better quality components if there offering 5 years instead of 3. A risk I’m willing to take … or not take.

Yeah, what they said
Drive is perfect in every respect. As others have said, it is dead quite, and gives off very little heat. Small and portable, it fits easily in my carry bag, even when its in its hard shell case. Powers via a single USB 2 cord also used for data transfer. If you have any doubts, don’t. This thing is best of breed at the moment. Oh, also, I reformatted it for full capacity. I don’t use any of the included backup features or software. I use Acronis TrueImage Home for backing up, and I just wanted the full 500GB for backing up my laptop and storing movies and music and stuff.

Excellent Portable Hard Drive
After shopping around for quite awhile, i decided to settle with this portable hard drvie because of its price, measurements, size and weight. So far it has been very good. Transfer rates are quick, it runs quietly and had not given me any problems. This unit is small enough to fit in a back pocket, front shirt pocket or front pouch of a bookbag. It weighs less than half a pound. If traveling with it often i would recommend investing in a protective carrying case.

Pros: Size, Weight, Capacity Gage, No External Power Source

Cons: The software bundled with the unit is complicated, un-user friendly and not very clear on what each one does.

I use this product just as a backup for video and music files and it does the job well. I just drag and drop files as if it were an extra drive. Its much easier than trying to figure out what each of the different softward programs does. For me its perfect. For someone who needs automatic backup, you might want to read into the included software before investing in this unit.

Hardware excellent, Software not so hot
The main difference between the WD Passport Elite and the slightly cheaper Passport Essential is in the pre-loaded software. Both versions include sync and encryption software, but only the Passport Elite comes with the “WD Anywhere” automatic backup software. However, if your main reason for buying the Passport Elite is to use it as a data backup drive for your PC, you better think twice – details on that later.

What’s so excellent about the hardware?

SIZE: The drive is so compact and light, it can fit in my shirt pocket easily.

CONNECTION: Just a simple USB cable takes care of both power and data. The provided cable is only 15 inches long, but I have tried a generic 30-inch USB cable and it works just fine.

SPEED: I benchmarked the data transfer rate to be 30MB/s for writing large files. This is about as good as it can get for a 5400RPM hard drive connected through USB 2.0.

NOISE: What noise? I have to put my ear right on the hard drive, in order to heard a faint sound during read/write.

What’s not so hot about the WD Anywhere backup software?

Initially, the WD Anywhere software appears to be a 30-day trial version. It turns out that on-line registration is required to activate the full version. Fair enough, except that my virus protection program blocked this software from accessing the Internet. So I have to temporarily suspend the virus protection in order to register.

Next, I started to backup selected directories on my PC. The software seems to get ’stuck’ after transferring just a few GB of data. It would consume over 60% of my computer’s CPU power, yet the files are just crawling along. I restarted the process a few times, but the results are the same. Finally, I downloaded the latest WD Anywhere Backup version 3.50, and it doesn’t hang up anymore. However, there are still problems when using this automatic backup software.

Suppose I transfer some image files from my camera to my PC, while the portable hard drive is not connected. WD Anywhere will queue-up those files for backup later, once the drive is connected. The problem is: if I rename/edit those files in the mean time, WD Anywhere is not smart enough to update its queue accordingly. So it will try unsuccessfully to backup those old files, and it will NOT backup those new files I have edited. It is ironic that the backup software for a PORTABLE hard drive requires the drive to be connected all the time. I have yet to find a way to force the software to rescan my directory and look for new files to backup. It is easier for me to just copy the whole directory manually.

The bottom line is, WD Passport Elite is still an excellent USB hard drive. Just remember that you cannot rely on WD Anywhere to backup all your files automatically.

[Update on April 4th]

Thanks to suggestion by William E. Merkley II, I downloaded a free program called ‘SyncToy’ (part of the Microsoft PowerToys suite). It works exactly the way I want to backup my photo files. I have already deleted the WD Anywhere backup program and will only use SyncToy from now on.

[Update on May 25th, 2009]

I tried using this hard drive connecetd to the USB port of my Philips DVP5990 DVD Player. The DVD player can detect there is an USB device connected, but it cannot read anything from the device. I think the fault is with the USB port of this player. It seems unable to supply the 500mA current required, therefore the hard drive cannot spin up. For this application, I need to get an USB hard drive with its own power supply instead.

Great product
We have had this for a couple of months. It is easy to use and I can’t believe how much space it has! Thanks!

Second one that didn’t work
The first one I ordered had one drive that was inacessable. The second one almost did my computer in. Something in the wiring. My computer flashed and blinked and finally crashed. Maybe it was just bad luck but I will not order from WD again. So I returned another one to Amazon who refunded my money.

Raid 0 Good Raid 1 Bad
While the Raid0 scenario is worth it for increased drive performance, the Raid1 is not. The purpose for Raid1 (mirroring) is so when one drive fails, you still have your data on the other drive. If a drive fails in this unit, how will a normal user replace the bad drive? Will you just continue running on the remaining drive? If you get this, make sure you get some type of extended warranty. The 1 year warranty from the manufacturer is not very good.

Works great!
It works as I had hoped it would. It was easy to set up. I love the fact that when I save to it, I’m saving to 2 drives – which gives me great backup. Thus, all I have to do to save a document and back it up at the same time, is click “Control” and “S.” I like that it has its own power supply and thus doesn’t drain my laptop.

Works great
I have had this drive for about a month now and I am loving it. All you have to do is hook it up, pop in the included software, and you are ready to roll. It does not make much noise and has more space than I will ever use. Overall, this is a simple and cost-effective solution for my storage needs.

Premature and Sudden Death
I was very happy with the drive’s ease of installation and the performance was great. Right up until the time it died. It threw a couple of “disk needs to be checked” alerts from Windows startup, and I took that as my cue to purchase a new drive and did. My system wouldn’t boot again to do the replacement and cloning. 16 months from happy camper to totally dead. I will not purchase another Western Digital Caviar drive.

Not as advertised
It really is just a bare drive in a box. There was no cable included or driver disk. I would have been better off just buying an OEM driver from another online vendor, and saved money doing so.

(Doesn’t come with cables)
I got this in hopes that replacing the harddrive would fix my computer’s crashing problem. It didn’t, but it’s still a nicer harddrive than I had- quieter, faster (usually. But then, my computer’s a lemon, so i can’t be hard on this drive). When I purchased it it came with no cables- some reviews mention cables and even discs and manuals, but it was not the case with mine- i bought a cheap cable off of newegg though, and plugging it all in and getting it set up wasn’t hard.

Good Hard Drive
Excellent Hard drive so far, no problems. Easy installation, but didn’t come with a SATA cable. 5.9 on WEI for Windows 7….

Note: requires SATA power cable, not Molex
This drive is in a retail package suitable for display on a store shelf (i.e. it’s not an OEM bare drive), so it comes with some extras: SATA data cable, instruction pamphlet in multiple languages, 4 mounting screws, and a CD of the Data Lifeguard setup and diagnostic software.

A SATA hard drive requires two cables: a SATA data cable (included) and a power cable (not included).

The included data cable is straight on both ends (neither end has a 90-degree bend as some SATA cables do). On the drive end, there is a big plastic nub that helps you get a better grip. As another reviewer mentioned, in a computer where the drive is mounted sideways in the chassis (ex: Gateway 710X), the nub may stick out so far from the back of the drive that it prevents the case from closing. However, it’s just soft clear plastic (you can see through it) with no wires inside. You can saw off however much you need to with an Xacto saw or hacksaw or maybe a knife.

Older WD drives had two types of POWER connectors on the back: a SATA power connector and a “legacy” rectangular white 4-pin Molex connector. You could use either one.

Two of the images associated with this item, including the main product image at the top of this page, show this drive with the additional legacy Molex 4-pin power connector on the back. This item does not have that power connector. I lowered my rating by 1 star because of the outdated and inaccurate product image. (It resulted in a two-week delay before I could put the drive into use.)

This drive only has a SATA power connector on the back. If your computer power supply only provides you with the old-type Molex power plugs, you will need a Molex-to-SATA power plug converter such as this one: Syba SY-CAB40007 Molex 4 Pin to 2x 15 Pin SATA Power Cable (5.5 Inches).

Amazon shows a cable that is “often ordered” with this drive, but it is a data cable. It already comes with a data cable. You are more likely to need the power cable adapter described above.

The drive is amazingly quiet. I cannot hear it at all over the sounds of my 5 year old WD 160GB drive.

At least the color is cute
The WD hard drive doesn’t fit quite right in the case, which is very flimsy and cheap. The zipper keeps opening up by itself. I don’t know if it’s broken or the drive is just too big for the case, but I will use it until it falls apart, and never buy this brand again.

It does what its supposed to
I bought several of these to store my external drives. I have several different brands besides Western Digital. It holds the Western Digital perfectly without straining the zipper. It also holds the Maxtor drive ok as well. Simple Techs are a harder fit and strain the zipper. Also, the handle attached to the zipper broke. Not a biggy because there’s always the cariber clip. Overall…it does what it’s supposed to. It protects them.

Pretty cool
It looks nice and it’s sleek.

The only issue is that you can tell it’s built cheap.

It looks like it won’t last very long.

Won’t clone
Usually WD drives are good. Gave this drive as a gift to my sister to increase her laptop space. Can’t clone another drive onto this one. So this is a door stopper. Need to return to WD.

Quiet, Fast and Reliable
I bought this drive to put in an external enclosure several months ago and it’s working like a champ. It’s quiet, fast and reliable. What more can you ask of a hard drive.

EZ Upgrade
I got an iPod for father’s day and was already pushing the limit of my 54GB hard drive. Bought the 120GB PATA since Dell said 120 was the biggest I could use. Got an Apricorn EZ Upgrade Kit which will work for PATA or SATA. I downloaded the clone software from Western Digital since I read a good review of it. I assume the Apricorn would have been OK too. I was up and running in less than an hour. The only scare I had was pulling out the old drive and not seeing the pins on back like the new drive had. After a few seconds I realized that the old drive had an addapter on it that just pulled off and pushed on to the new drive.

Amazon does it again!
I have always had great service from Western Digital drives. This one is the same. It was easy to find on Amazon and the price was the cheapest, by far. Delivery was quick even though I used standard free shipping!!

160 GB Hard Drive
This was a gift, I installed in my daughter’s computer. She is happy with the added capacity & it has been performing flawlessly.

You will be one of those people… Don’t be fooled.
Using Windows 7 (WD website says it’s compatible), HP Pavillion Elite e9270t, using Firewire 800 connection… Installation – horrific. I must have tried 10 different things just to get the WD Drive Manager installed. Copying files from another external drive connected usb 2.0 to this new WD Studio Edition II has been extremely painful. Every minute or so, the drive status from WD Drive Manager states “Devise not found”. Meanwhile, my computer is hung (not CPU or memory constrained either). After copying most of my stuff over I copied it back b/c I don’t trust this drive. Emailed support a few days ago and do not have a response. I have gotten the blue screen a couple times and severe window issues trying to restart since installing this and attempting to copy data back and forth. I am 8 out of 10 in terms of computer knowledge, so don’t think you won’t be one of the lucky ones – if you are, make sure you back this drive up elsewhere. I have lost days of my time due to this drive. Wait until they improve the technology.

Terrible drive
Are you a windows user? If so, this is NOT the drive for you. Installation is tough. The installation software doesn’t work in Vista. You will need to go into the disk tools within the system admin section and create the drive. Not only does the ssoftware not work, but the Firewire 400/800 connection doesn’t work. You’ll need to use the USB 2.0 port. Don’t waster your time and money with this drive.

Works Well – But I Had To Replace A Drive After One Year
I bought this 2 TB drive about 18 months ago for my Mac Pro and about 6 months ago one of the drives began to fail. I tried reformatting and repairing the drive but no luck – it seemed to work on and off for a while but totally stopped about a month ago. It was a little difficult determining which drive failed but by putting the drives directly into my Mac Pro I was able to isolate which drive was faulty. I have now bought a new WD Green drive and swapped it out and now everything is as new again. I hope this is not a indicator of the life expectancy of these WD Green drives as they generally get good reviews. For now I have a working back-up solution again – so as long as I don’t loose another drive I will be marginally happy.

Otherwise the drive is quite and it does work well with Time Machine. I use the drive with the USB port as this is fast enough for my purposes.

Fantastic HD. I also have the 2 TB. Works like a charm with my Macbook. Highly recommended.
I also have the 2 TB. Works like a charm with my Macbook. Highly recommended.

Couldn’t be happier!
I love this new 4TB hard drive. It is very easy to use, has all the connections I could want and transfers data very fast (Using Firewire 800 connection). Truly a plug and play item for my mac, plus it has the full 4TB of storage, unlike certain external hard drives of the past. And being able to daisy chain this with my other firewire drives is great. Can’t wait to get my second one!

Are you kidding me???
While Western Digital is a great brand I do not see paying 1,497.10 for a hard drive that should be $70.00 at the most. This is obviously a rip off and the seller should be ashamed for trying to sell it at a 400% profit

Mine works well
I bought one of these for my HTPC, which seems like a perfect use for it. The drive offers a balance between performance and power consumption, plus it is very quiet.

You should know that this drive is not intended to be as fast as a true 7200rpm drive; power savings and quieter operation result from taking the speed down. If performance is more important, there are faster 1TB drives; look elsewhere.

In installed mine and it worked perfectly, and still does, as I expected it would. The system performance does not suffer in ways that I notice, but on the HTPC ultra-fast disks is not a priority.

UPDATE: I bought a second one for 2TB on my media/HTPC … it also works well.

When it works!
First drive failed Diagnostics. Second drive from WDC, not the Vendor, was DOA (Drive was referbished, and just off the (re)assembly line. If you yell loud enough, WDC will swap out a NEW one not another referb. As they say, Third time is a charm. Works great, saves power. I don’t notice the reduced performance over a straight 7200 RPM Drive. The Vendor was not to blame in any way for the drive problems. WDC needs to clean up their act, quality control is very poor on these drives.
