Katy Steele is a small lady, with a huge canorous voice.

At 19 years of age, she has all the stage presence and poise that you might expect of a seasoned professional 10 years her senior. Moreover, she also writes some of the most charmingly simple and well crafted, pop, country and rock songs, you are ever likely to put to your ears.

Perhaps it is these things that explain why, with her band Little Birdy, she seems to stand on the cusp of making it really really big.

They certainly won't fail from a lack of influential backers.

Katy is the younger sister of Luke Steele (The Sleepy Jackson himself), shares bass player Scott O'Donoghue, with Fourth Floor Collapse and recently aquired Phil Stevens as manager (who counts John Butler Trio and The Waifs among the bands he looks after). This leaves Little Birdy with no shortage of huge support gigs, or reputation among local music punters.

But you guys know how i feel about hype. Which is why I watch Little Birdy with some uncomfortable nervousness. It seems clear that hype is a big part of what has taken Little Birdy to this point. They have played no more then 15 gigs since they started in June 2002. Already they have a huge following amongst fans of local music, and lots of interest from the big labels and music industry types. Is this unfair? Shouldn't bands have to play a hundred gigs as unsigned nobodies before they start drawing crowds of the sorts that Little Birdy are getting each time they play?

I'm not sure. I'm not qualified to answer this question (you wont hear me say that often). Someone that has poured their heart and soul into hundreds of gigs that nobody ever comes to, in a band that nobody has ever heard of, would be better placed to stand in judgement of the Little Birdy hype machine.

If there is one thing I am always talking about its that music journalism shouldn't be full of self fulfilling prophecies. The very act of talking about a band, doesnt make them worth talking about.

Which is why you should ignore the Little Birdy hype, of which this site and this post is a part. Ignore everything I had said up untill this point. Rather, you should download these Little Birdy mp3s, go see Katy and her band live, and then make up your own mind.

On thursday the 15th of may, Little Birdy play at the Amplifier bar in Perth (393 Murray Street). They go on at about 10:30. Bands start at about 9/9:30. Look out for Little Birdy playing in the eastern states some time in June, when they will be playing support shows for Skulker.
