Todays mp3 is off the new Wilco album: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I cant be naffed writing a whole heap about this song, except to say that I love this album SO hard. I haven't loved an album like this since the self-titled Marcy Playground album.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is one of those classic albums that come along only every few years, but generally pass under the radar for most music lovers. So much so, this album almost never saw the light of day. The A&R guy for the record company that Wilco had been signed up to, decided that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was a "career ending effort", sighting a lack of a clear single which they could push on radio. Wilco changed labels to Nonesuch records, and the album was saved.

Here is a particularly relevant joke for you. Why did the A&R guy get hit by a train? Because he didn't hear it coming.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, would be best described as alt-country. Having said that, these boys are quality musicians, eager to include a wide range of instrumentation on their songs. Indeed, it is the upbeat violin on this track, that makes it the standout from the album. The electronica and irreverent melodies (or lack thereof) on I am trying to break your heart leaves you thinking of Radiohead (the Kid A / Amnesiac Radiohead): about as far away from alt-country as one can get.

Furthermore, Jeff Tweedy writes excellent lyrics. I dont think there is anything I dont like about this album.

Tom Waits has 2 new albums, Alice and Blood Money. From what I hear they (the 2 new albums) are somewhat of a departure from his grizzly percussion dirven effort of 1999: Mule Variations and somewhat of a return to the more mellow stuff he was producing in the 70's.

I like the poetic Waits, the Tom Waits that writes spoken word pieces that ooze character.... but i really, really, like the abrasive Tom Waits, the Tom Waits that composes music with trash cans in some dirty little alleyway: the sort of music he was making on Mule Variations and 1992's Bone Machine.

This song, "Kommienezuspadt" is the latter sort (and not particularly representative of his recent stuff). "Kommienezuspadt" is from Alice and its mostly lines from the Lewis Carroll classic, Alice in Wonderland. Alice itself is inspired not by the character Alice from Alice in Wonderland but by the real-life Alice that inspired Lewis Carol to write Alice in Wonderland. If you understand how that works your doing better then i am.

Oh and as the title might suggest, this song is sung in German. The title translates to something a bit like "Comming too late". Only Tom Waits thinks of singing lines from Alice in Wonderland in german.

Halogen are a Perth Band. They are Neil Scothern (bass), Ben Crooke (drums), Jasmine Yee (vocals) Chris Ashton (guitars) and Frans Bisschops (guitars & keyboard).

This particular song inevitably provokes comparisons with The Superjesus. Jasmie Yee and Sarah McLeod have a similar strength to their voices. The fact that i want to have sex with both, is another thing the two share in common.

I should really fight the decay of popular music. Its all about the sound and never the visuals, so what i meant to say is that Halogen and Superjesus are both wicked cool bands and i dont care that their lead singers are both very fuckable.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have a new album coming out, called By The Way. The the first single from said album goes by the same name: By the Way.

It doesnt come off sounding as catchy as the first single from Californication did, (I fell deeply in love with Scar Tissue the moment i heard it) but i've no doubt that if By The Way is even half as good as Californication was, that it will go down in history as one of the most influential albums of the 00's.

This is a song about that often under recognised class of Australians, the anti-aspirational class. John Howard likes to tell us stories about Labour's inability to offer anything to the aspirational class of Australians: those that want to get a better job, raise their children well and own their own house. Well this song is about the millions that make up the anti-aspirationals. The millions that want nothing more then to sit at home in their dressing gowns to watch the trials and tribulations of 'The Bold and The Beautiful', the infinite justice of 'Judge Judy' and the outrageous scandals of 'The Jerry Springer Show'.

And why the hell not? This world is spoilt by people that try too hard.
