InterpolIf you're the kind of boy who practices looking moody in front of the mirror whilst finger-combing his fringe over his eyebrows, then Interpol are probably a band you should become familiar with (if you're a girl, Interpol probably don't like you because you have germs, and the potential to rumple their impeccably smart suits). Hailing from the 'hotspot of cool' that is NYC, they've been compared with everyone from Joy Division to...erm, Joy Division. The band have been the centre of a hype storm not seen since the days of that last shitty garage band who signed to a major label. Interpol, on the other hand, are backed primarily by indie label cash, so you can like them without fear of losing your carefully honed indie cool.

Additionally, unlike many other bands currently forcing their way down your gullet, Interpol actually release good records. To wit, 'Obstacle 1', their soon-to-be-released single. If you like it, check out their various other tracks from around the place. One track, 'PDA', received airplay on Triple J and Rage a couple of months back. All are taken from their gloriously miserable debut, Turn on the Bright Lights.

I don't understand it. Madonna is old and washed up. But these guys would rather do it with her. So where's the appeal?

Well, i'll tell you. "I'd Rather Do it With Madonna" is one of those uptempo fun little tunes that are all about making fun of them celebs whilst doing a li'l bit 'a rockin', reminiscent of past releases from The Drugs or Klinger. "i'd rather do it with Madonna" is the first release from The Androids, which is fronted by ex-superjesus guitarist Tim Henwood.

It's appeal is summarised by this excerpt from their website:

Do It With Madonna is:
  • The Androids' debut single
  • A bold announcement of the band's unwillingness to accept second best (sorry Britney)
  • A frank statement of male sexuality in the modern age
  • One fuel injected slice of rock action driven on a creamy FM radio styled guitar riff and a chorus that'd have everyone from Badfinger, The Raspberries and Cheap Trick to Fastball, New Radicals and *** on their knees declaring themselves unworthy.
So make no mistake about it, it seems these boys have declared themselves one-hit-wonders....and are proud of it. Unfortunately, at this stage, all the mp3 goodness I have to offer you people is a dodgy radio rip, but keep your eyes and ears peeled and the tune should be yours for the downloading soon. Until then, check out the video and other streaming songs at http://www.theandroids.com Update:

IdlewildA year ago or two ago Idlewild were been hailed as the next big thing to come from the UK. Beats me why it hasn't happened yet cause their new record the remote part is a fine piece of work. Ignore the REM comparisons these guys rock way harder.

Check them out you won't be sorry you did.

MaxHe's remixed Mogwai, sampled mobile phone buzzing, and has a song named "The Gradual Disappearance From Food Packaging Of The Lettres Ornees Typeface Since The Nineteen Sixties". He is Max Tundra and as you might have guessed, he's a bit of a smartarse. While his previous output was characterised by impossible time signatures, varied instrumentation and unorthodox melodies, Mr. Tundra is now seeking to become the next Prince, if his latest offering Mastered By Guy At The Exchange is anything to go by. Except, thankfully, without the sex. Mastered... is basically a blend of catchy 80s synth-pop hooks and Japanese 8-bit console game music with an IDM spin. On the basis of this album, I wouldn't mind sampling the contents of his medicine cabinet (you can decide whether that's a metaphor or not). It also boasts one of the best album covers I've ever seen in my life. If you like music that makes like a broken cd player, take a peek at this track.

I only know three things about The Saints:
They were from Brisbane.
They were punk pioneers.
They made at least one bloody brilliant song.
This simply rocks. Upbeat rock with some wicked horns make for one catchy fucking song. If you don't like this then you don't deserve to live.

The Reindeer Section

This is 24 members of the 27 member group that call themselves The Reindeer Section: in-fucking-credible, fan-indie-tastic group of musicians from Glasgow Scotland. So good are they, that I feel no remorse for having invented 2 new adjectives in the sentence prior. Their sophmore album, "Son Of Evil Reindeer" also happens to be my favorite album for the first 9 months of 2002.

Christ its good.

I havent been so pleased by a new CD since.... well since not really that long ago. But this album really strikes a chord with me. The Reindeer Section are a "team", or "collective" of Glasgowian musicians, the individual members of which reads like a who's who of scottish indie music. Such luminaries as Belle and Sebastian, Idlewild, Arab Strap, Mogwai and Teenage Fanclub all have members that contributed to this album ....... but it is Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol that perfoms front-man duties on most tracks, and was the drunken individual responsible for putting together this ensemble cast. Their rather naff little site is at www.reindeersection.com
