Well how shit was this weekend, my parents found my hydro setup in my cupboard and I almost got kicked out of home! My mates 19th included me not sleeping and watching my ex-girlfriend use me, treat me like shit and then watch her try to get with every guy in sight. She was un-successful cause all my mates wouldn't do it in front of me, they prefer to stab me in the back. Then I drove all the way to Ballajura (tired as all fuck) to see an all ages free festival, including Gyroscope, to only be informed that the fucker has been washed out!
So while I don't give a shit about what people think heres the best band from Perth! Gyroscope. They are fuckin awesome and have just been signed to Festival Mushroom Records with the rumour that they will record a debut album soon! These guys fuckin rock and so does their track I've Been Struck By Lightning Once So What's The Chances Of It Happening Again? Un-believably Daniel Sanders from Gyroscope was struck by lightning while fishing. So have a listen and be sure to catch their energetic live performance before they get fuckin huge!
I've also chucked Cat Power - He War in cause it simply appeals allot to me at the moment. It’s a good track. So listen to it!
Gyroscope - I've Been Struck By Lightning Once So What's The Chance Of It Happening Again 192kbps, 5.1Mb

As hinted by ExistAngst's March 2nd post, here are some mp3s by an anonymous, unsigned band renamed with titles from the upcoming Radiohead album!
Hmm... my mistake, these are indeed songs from the upcoming Radiohead album, albeit live versions... my bad!
Radiohead is without a doubt one of the worlds most recognised bands alive today. This is emphasized by numerous accolades they have received, including 3 of their albums being listed in Q Magazine's 100 greatest albums of all time ( OK Computer #2, The Bends #4 and Kid A #35) and #2 in The Spin's "Top 40: most important artists making music right now" poll. Furthermore, they are respected amongst their contemporaries, with various collaboration projects and covers. Some well-known examples are UNKLE & Thom Yorke, Asian Dub Foundation & Ed O'Brien, Eddie Vedder covering "Creep" and The Flaming Lips covering "Knives Out".
There has been various speculations as to the release date of their upcoming album, their 6th to date. Rumours were put to rest last week when it was announced that it is due on June 9th, titled Hail To The Thief. This is being preceded by the single "There There", due on May 26th. The track listing for the album is as follows:
01. 2 + 2 = 5
02. Sit Down. Stand Up
03. Sail To The Moon
04 . Backdrifts
05. Go To Sleep
06. Where I End And You Begin
07. We Suck Young Blood
08. The Gloaming
09. There There
10. I Will
11. A Punch-Up at a Wedding
12. Myxamatosis
13. Scatterbrain
14. A Wolf At The Door
Most of these tracks have been previewed at their tour of Portugal and Spain in July/August 2002. Tibits that are of interest from this tour are the new songs include Ed O'Brien and Jonny Greenwood (guitarists) playing percussion (although Jonny is a jack of all "instruments") and Phil Selway (drummer) doing backing vocals for Thom Yorke! Although the songs from the album would have gone through the studio treatment, the two tracks we have here are taken from DAT recordings of their Spanish leg of their tour in 2002. "There There" is a guitar/percussion-based track (ala Radiohead classics), whereas "Myxomatosis" is a keyboard/effects-based track (ala the Kid A/Amnesiac era).
Radiohead - There There, Live From Salamanca, Spain (07 August 2002) 192Kbps, 8.69Mb
Radiohead - Myxomatosis, Live From Salamanca, Spain (06 August 2002) 192Kbps, 5.88Mb
Thanks to gongboy for hosting these files again!
Radiohead is going to tour their native UK, as well as headlining several festivals in Europe this year. Once again, Australia has been shafted and has been explicitly stated by the band that they are not touring here this year! A word of advice: don't hold your breath for the Australian leg of the Radiohead tour... grumble #@$&*%!
P.S. Hail To The Thief has been leaked and is being downloaded as I edit this blog... updates soon!!!

Shyloh - Greeny & The Weatherman 128kbps, 4.92mb
it's kind of like - there's guitars in there and all that, but it's like Beck crossed with The Velvet Underground. It sounds quite strange, but it'll make sense once you've heard it. There's lots of samples and loops. There's all sorts of things in music now, I think it's really boring to be a really 'indie' band.

I can clearly remember exactly where I was when I fell in love with lemon jelly. It was a shit of a day at work and it was like this close to raining before suddenly, I heard the beautiful jazzy rhythmic samples of A Tune For Jack. Even if you'd planned it, it couldn't have been any more perfect. In fact, to me lemonjelly.ky (a collection of their previous 3 eps they released throughout the late '90's) is one of my favourite albums ever.
Fred Deakin and Nick Franglen, two dj's out of England, are Lemon Jelly and have released a new lp Lost Horizons. It has been out for a while now, but only just starting to be played on the radio.... and yes, that's also a sample of space walk on the channel 7 promo *shudder*. It was always going to difficult to top lemonjelly.ky and personally, I didn't find this album as rhythmic as the previous and I also found some tracks were annoyingly displaced, but if you're willing to work though Experiment Number Six, it returns you right back on a strawberry-flavoured hot air balloon ride.
All of the best tracks have killer vocal samples like Charlton Heston moaning on about how he's a "Ramblin' Man", or on "Space Walk", the ecstatic transmission of an astronaut proclaiming "it's beautiful" again and again and the theatrical English baritone, "All the ducks are swimming in the water, falderalderaldah, falderalderaldah." download these tracks, make love to them, then go buy it or something...
off lost horizons...
Lemon Jelly - Ramblin' Man 160kbps 8.12mb
Lemon Jelly - Space Walk 160kbps 8.06mb
Lemon Jelly - Nice Wether for Ducks 160kbps 7.01mb
Please don't complain about the mp3s being ripped at 160kbps or silpheed will rape you

Arguably the best band ever off of Tooth & Nail Records, Fullerton, California's Driver Eight was a proverbial droplet in a veritable Southern Californian ocean of alternative rock (read: high tide). However, while other bands may leave a rock legacy here, a rabid fanbase there, or perhaps some sexually transmitted goodies scattered about their scene, Driver Eight left behind little else but an excellent album that will surely stand the test of time (assuming current music fans/future anthropologists can locate the damn thing in the first place.)
Stylistically speaking, the band could best be described as a mix between Catherine Wheel and Clarity-era Jimmy Eat World with subtle early 90's influences. (I feel morally obligated to mention the Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket.) In addition, frontman Matt McCartie's trademark nasal whine can be quite Corganesque at times, and let's not forget that the band named themselves after a song by REM...
Legend has it that Driver Eight received their contract with Tooth & Nail shortly after their first show. Talk about a free ride...! The song featured here, Carrousel is one of the more straightforward rockers from their first (and only!) album, Watermelon, and showcases the talent of all 3 band members quite favourably, IMHO.

The Belles are a two-piece outfit from Kansas, USA. On the first listen of their debut album - Omerta, my first impression of their style of music is akin to Badly Drawn Boy. Featuring only two members - Christopher Tolle and Jake Cardwell, The Belles still manage to utilise a wide range of sounds - from the basic vocals to acoustic/electric guitar, bass, keyboards, lap steel, drums, tambourine, chimes and percussion. Omerta features a set of catchy and well-crafted pop songs, including "You Can't Have It All" and "A Thousand Ships".
Here is a taste of their debut effort - the first single off Omerta "Never Said Anything". A couple of listens and you will find yourself singing the chorus over and over again!

Civilised describe themselves as being "Dark Wave Alt. Rock".
I am not sure what 'Dark Wave' means. Come to that, I'm not even sure what 'Alt Rock' is. The alternative to rock and roll?.
However i can be sure of some things. For instance, I can be sure that whatever it is i really really like it.
Maybe 'Dark Wave' refers to the dark, moody lyrics written with far too much respect for harmony to be delivered with overt aggression. Or maybe it refers to the pulsating guitar riffs that sit neatly beneath the floating melody of the keyboard and Martin Wills haunting vocals. Or perhaps 'Dark Wave' is just the way all of this comes together to form Civilised: a band quite unlike anything that has come out of Perth in recent times.
Civilised - Accident 192kbps, 4.45mb
Civilised - Smile (For the camera) 192kbps, 6.20mb
Even a cursory examination of the debut disk from these young goths demonstrates the difficulty one has when trying to fit them into a genre. There is too much here that is driven by the guitar to deny the indie-rock. Too much of the dark and foreboding lyrical content to deny the Gothic influence. The drum beats too synthetic and dancey to deny that..... well to deny that deep down they actually want to discard their studded collars and misanthropic attitude in favour of glow sticks and dance moves.
Civilised are...
Nathan Christiansen: Bass. Alister Fuller: Drums. Carl Hannemann: Guitar. Martin Wills: Vox. Michael Workman: Keys
You can catch them live in Perth at...
The Rosemount hotel on March 22
HQ in Leederville on April 12th
Kenwick Youth Centre on April 13th
Their home on the interweb is: www.civlised.net
They are just very good. While they won't be the next big thing out of Perth, they are certainly the most interesting.

In a World Gone Mad....
George Bush you’re looking like Zoolander
Trying to play tough for the camera
What am I on crazy pills? We’ve got to stop it
Get your hand out my grandma’s pocket
We need health care more than going to war
You think it’s democracy they’re fighting for?
I had a post planned. But the lyrics speak for themselves. And just incase you haven't heard, you can get the song from the beastie boys website:

Jaymis rarely stops listening to:
John Spencer Blues Explosion - Bellbottoms (128Kb/s 4819KB)
This track, from the 1994 album "Orange" has it all. Rockin string section action, people going "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaeeeeeeeeoooooooooh", plenty of deep resonant "Yeeeeeeaaaaah"s and "Bebbeh"s, and of course the ever present "Blues, Explosion". All this stuff is good - great even - but it all pales when you realise that you get to play the call and response game with Mr John Spencer himself:
John Spencer Himself: Thankyouverymuch ladies and gentlemen, right now I got ta tell yah bout.
The fabulous.
Most groovy.

The " Electric 6" fiasco spoilt Jack White. For me anyway.
ME: Dude.... that cant be Jack White on this "Danger Danger! High Voltage!" song. It sounds nothing like him.
EVERY PERSON I KNOW IN THE WHOLE WORLD: Dude... that is SO Jack White. It totally sounds like him.
ME: No way man! And who is the chick he is singing with anyway? There are no chicks in The Electric 6!
EPIKITWW: Dude!! Jack White IS the chick!!!
*Long Pause. You can almost hear the cogs and gears working in my mind as i contemplate the significance of this new information*
ME: So Jack White is singing like some skanky chick? In a very suggestive lust-song-duet with another man?
EPIKITWW: Yeah dude. Fraid so.
ME: WORST EVER! Never. Fucking. Worse.
The damage was deep and immediate. How could this man, this personification of heterosex, the pentultimate modern Gentleman, disgrace himself in such a way. He is so careful with his constructed image. With the way he plays the media. How did he let himself get involved in a song that will inevitably be on the next volume of CD compilation, "Gay Disco Anthems"?
It is in this dubious context, and doubtful state of mind, that i pick up the new White Stripes album: Elephant. The album widely rumored to be their last.
Siblings White (Jack and Meg) decided to send out advance vinyl copies of Elephant to a select few (500) music journalists.
To quote V2 Records president Andy Gershon.....
"Jack wanted people to hear the music the way it was meant to be heard, which is on vinyl. He wanted them to listen to it as we used to listen to records, In addition, it just creates one extra step before someone can put it up on Limewire or KaZaa."
SUPRISE ANDY!!!
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army 192kbps, 5.27mb
The White Stripes - Girl You Have No Faith In Medicine 192kbps, 4.48mb
This pre-release version has found its way to the internet almost 3 months before the CD is due to hit shops. Since I can only presume that my omission from the 500 was a simple oversight, I don't feel so bad that I downloaded the whole album from KaZaa the moment I heard about it.
The very first thing that strikes the ear about 'Elephant' is a bass lick. Not a special bass lick. Not even a very good one. But its presence as the backbone to the opening track and first single, "Seven Nation Army" heralds a new development in the music of Jack White: the self-imposed rock-minimalism (or rock-puritanism), as seen on White Blood Cells, has been abandoned for a more relaxed inclusive approach to making a rock album. You hear it in the bass riff, then again in the inclusion of a covered Burt Bacharach song, again in the voice of Meg White singing on her own and finally, and possibly most tellingly, it's there in the extra studio work that obviously went into this album. Perhaps Jack doesnt feel as anxious as he once did about the need to protect Rock music from the corruptive influences of modern times.
Come to that, its really hard to see what Jack feels at all on this new album. Call it conviction, call it passion, call it honesty, call it what you will..... 'White Blood Cells' had it in spades, and 'Elephant' seems to lack it. Sure, 'Elephant' sees Jack returns to have a bash at all his trademark nostalgia driven themes, such as the death of the true gentleman and his own (possibly underprivledged?) childhood, but one is still left feeling more then just a little bit disapointed after that.
On its own i'm sure Elephant is a great album. It still has plenty of the crunchy rock and roll to make it one of the better albums for 2003. And while the cynic in me wants to say that 'The Stripes' gave up the self imposed, sharia law of rock and roll (purity at all costs) because they have run dry of good musical ideas, the optimist in me says that this change to their music IS a good musical idea, in and of itself. Its with some tentative optimism that I would say that they have made a different album and they should get big ups for doing so.
But when i put 'Elephant' up beside 'White Blood Cells' which almost seems to radiate light, I start to see 'Elephant' in an even harsher light. I start to notice the little imperfections. Like the similarity between 'Theres No Home For You Here' (track 3) and 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground'. Jack has taken the riff to Dead Leaves, played it a little bit softer, given it a new name and slapped it into the new album hoping no one will notice. On other tracks they have made up for weak guitar riffs by amping up the drums a little bit louder.
Even so, Jack still has a killer voice* and this will still be one of my top 10 albums for the year. Such is the skill with which this brother/sister pair craft their songs, that they can release sub-standard material and i will still listen to it religiously.
01. Seven Nation Army
02. Black Math
03. There's No Home For You Here
04. I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself
05. In The Cold, Cold Night
06. I Want To Be With The Boy
07. You've Got Her In Your Pocket
08. Ball and Biscuit
09. The Hardest Button To Button
10. Little Acorns
11. Hypnotize
12. The Air Near My Fingers
13. Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine
14. It's True That We Love One Another
* When he isnt singing like a skanky chick in a very suggestive lust-song-duet with another man.
P.S You guys know this wasn't a gay bash don't you? It was a Jack White bash.

Adam Goren, aka Atom + His Package, is a one-man act from Pennsylvania, USA, who creates original music on his QY700 and RM1X sequencers ("the package") that fall into some niche equidistant between early 80's new wave, late 80's hair metal, and early 90's punk rock. Atom's songs are typically fast and fun, with lyrics as humorous as they are kitschy.
For the uninitiated, Atom + His Package could be best described as Andrew W.K.'s ADHD-affected younger brother playing Dismemberment Plan songs while overdosing on soy-based imitation meat products. More often than not, the end result sounds reminiscent of jingles from children's television programming, gone horribly, horribly wrong. The song featured here, I Am Downright Amazed at What I Can Destroy With Just a Hammer is from Atom's new album Attention! Blah Blah Blah, and takes the "do-it-yourself" aspect of independent rock to a whole new level, as Atom weaves a heartfelt tale of the joys of home-improvement:
"Nails in drywall, paint haul, blah blah
Move in, no sink, new roof, I think
I bribed the garbage man!
I am a super bad boy again..."
Spoken like a true champ. With a rabid New England fanbase, as well as growing support in the Southern and Midwestern United States, Atom has firmly established himself as a true idiot savant of pop punk.

Some dude (I'm not sure if it is but I think it was done by bushwacka from layo and bushwacka) decided it would be funny to grab a speech from George W and tweak it a little on the good old pro tools. I'm not sure if anyone has ever heard this before but I found it on the net a few days ago and thought it was kinda funny. It's not a music mp3 but it's worth downloading.
Bushwacked.mp3 112kbps 3.8mb A while ago I heard this song on the radio and thought it was a new song by On Inc but actually it's by a possie called Onyx. The song in question is "Slam Harder" and is off their album Bacdafucup. What caught my attention was that the song samples the theme to Welcome Back Kotter and actually sounds pretty neat-0. "Aiyyo, who slam harder? Onyx, or Vince Carter?"...onyx of course!
Onyx - Slam Harder 192kbps 6.3mb One of my favourite albums of 2002 was Turn On The Bright Lights by New York City outfit Interpol. For people who haven't yet got a copy of this bit of plastic I say SHAME ON YOU! Anyhow, for the people who have heard bits of ... Bright Lights (and liked it), download this. The song is called Song Seven and it's off a compilation called Clooney Tunes that’s was released just before their Fukd ID #3 12 inch vinyl in 2001.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
End Transmission, the latest release by hardcore band Snapcase, chronicles what I believe is a musical rendition of a futuristic society similar to the one featured in the Orgy video for "Blue Monday", where the proletariat chase each other around with syringes yippy skippy and scratch each other on the face. (Or perhaps that is just the lithium talking.) Coagulate is the strongest track on the album, with a true ripper of a chorus that will digust many old ladies and loosen the erections of mall metal fans worldwide.*
Much like their hardcore brethren in bands such as Hot Water Music, Snapcase carry on the tradition of pseudo-intellectual packagaging (see diagram above, at right) with an elaborate booklet that reads more like a plumbing schematic.
All wankery aside, End Transmission is a fine album with a welcome absence of filler material. It isn't for everyone, but neither is hardcore in general. All those wishing to enter the belly of the beast, say aye.
"John the Baptist's head was taken for his faith was strong
Can you defect the didactic army without breaking down?"

What’s better than being stoned at uni and realising you can't be fucked working? Realising that you only have $2 to fix your munchies or is it that The Used are playing in the background. I'm too stoned to know! Now The Used are the most energetic band to come out of the States since At The Drive-In, and their debut Single from their Self Titled Album shows this.
A Box Full Of Sharp Objects is what I would describe as Emo-Core, a mix between Emo and Hardcore. This song has a sick melodic verse and an even greater, more powerful chorus.

Can anyone tell me why we would be getting lots (atleast a dozen hits every day) from www.literotica.com. If you followed a link from literotica.com, drop me a line to tell me where the link is and what it's about.
Im facinated to know why a porn site might be sending us traffic. (I think it might have something to do with our motto... which could quite easily be taken the wrong way.)
On that note, let me make this post all about matters of keeping house.
For anyone that wants to write for this site. - At this stage I would say we are probably fairly close to saturation point as far as writers are concerned. Which doesn't mean theres no point in asking... it just means that now you actually have to be good, where as in the past i let any old mofo write here. So if you do want to write here this is what i need...
- To know that you will write here reliably. Atleast once a month. At the very least. I'm sick of signing people up that arent really that enthusiastic about it in the first place. Which brings me to the next point...
- To know that you are enthusiastic to write for thealt. That you live, breath, eat and fuck music. Not lots you can do to demonstrate this. Just bear it in mind.
- To know that you have atleast 10mb of webspace at your disposal, for mp3s and pictures to go with your posts.
- To know that you have good taste. Send me an outline of what your first 3 posts would be about.
- To know that you are reasonably handy with the english language. Send me a CD or Gig review.
I'm sure by now you've also seen the fledgling new section to this site, The "Unsigned Artists" Database. It represents ever such a slight change in tack for this site. A minor adjustment to our raison de'etre if you will. I'm sure many of you will tell me that its sucks (some already have) and that I should stop it immediately. Still others, know what when i take the bit between my teeth and start running with something, theres not much point in complaining to me about the direction i'm going. A nautical metaphor and an equine metaphor in the same paragraph, forgive me.
So with that in mind, let me ask......
Are you in an unsigned band? Want an audience apon which to force your music? -
You do? Bonza! Then send me an email and we will see what we can sort out. The only pre-requisite is that you've got your stuff down on a REASONABLY good quality recording. Preferably in mp3 format. In fact, if your REALLY good, ill post your music here as singles from the upcoming Radiohead album. That'll guarantee your shit gets heard. A few Radiohead nerds might get mad about it... but seriously getting beaten up by angry Radiohead fans isnt really much like getting beaten up at all. So send me your music.
ExistAngst is listening to...
