Even + The Mess hall + The WakeUps @ the Hopetoun Hotel. It€™s a night of firsts, my first time at the €˜Hoey€™, my first time seeing Even, and possibly the first time I€™ve seen someone try to skank to even€

The Hoey is a classic pub rock venue, small and cosy with an amazing atmosphere and acoustics, the sort of venue that isn€™t in vogue anymore, which is a damn shame. By the time that I rocked up the wake ups were in full swing, their old moniker, the scruffs is a more apt description of these guys, not the prettiest band out there, but boy howdy they can play. Hard, dirty rock, with an energy reminiscent of You Am I, the Hives and new boy wonders the vines, the kind of music your mother always warned you about€ I€™m looking forward to seeing these guys, and the lead singer informed me that they have an album out in 3 weeks or so, keep an eye out for that.

Up next were the mess hall, I didn€™t really know where to place these guys, but I think that if the white stripes and AD/DC had a lovechild, and this lovechild was raised in Tamworth, that would be the mess hall. Two guys, a fucking lot of noise, just straight up bluesy folk rock, not really my style but they did grow on me towards the end.

Several beers later the crowd are getting antsy waiting for Even to start. For those of you not familiar with these Melbourne indie guitar pop superheroes, be ashamed, very ashamed. Their set was filled with blistering pop riffs and hair, lots of hair, in fact I€™m sure the guitarist was in the Beatles at some point, either that or he has some serious Beatles envy going on. At this point I should explain the reference to skanking, the dude in front of me was wearing a down by law jacket, and whilst very pissed he decided that he would dance to even, in a semi skanking-elvis type manner, given a few more beers I probably would have joined him. Even played a mix of new and old songs, they opened with 'No Surprises', perhaps my favourite Even song, playing some perennial favourites like €˜black umbrella€™ and €˜sunshine comes€™ before moving on to songs from their latest effort €˜A different high€™, simply brilliant. Songs like 'Kommercial Radio' and €˜Shining Star€™ showed how amazing these guys are, and why they have built a dedicated following and a reputation as one of Australia€™s best live acts. They finished up with 'we are the purple nazz' but the crowd demanded more, I was yelling out 'Stop and Go Man' and the drummer from the mess ups agreed with my pick of encore, yelling out 'play stop and go man you poofters'; it doesnt get much better than that. If you get the chance go see them live they are fucking excellent.

*sigh*

The Radar Bros. make melancholy country-flavored pop and i can't help but die in their arms everytime i listen to them... that's a lot of death young man.

Another piece of greatness about these guys is that they're on See Thru Broadcasting. See Thru is Dave Sardy's record label and is home to other cool stuff like The Starlight Mints and Enon. Both of these bands are featured @ Epitonic. Check out "Enon - Come Into" and "Starlight Mints - Valerie Flames".

p.s. There's a guitar lick in 'Stay' which reminds me of a certain song by a certain other.. guy.. who is kinda country/rocky blah blah and has a drummer named Kenny. Mad props to anyone who emails me with the artist and song. Just remember that 'nobody loves no one'. Yes, that was hint city.

A Sydney based band Agaugefor describe themselves as "Folk - Metal" whatever that means they opened for incubus at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney and then again for Incubus at Sydney Horden Pavilion shows as well as the Royal theatre in Canberra

The Stickfigures are a 6 piece from Perth. They've been generating a bit of a vibe around their music over the last couple of years, gigging in and around Perth and getting their stuff played regularly on RTRFM (independant perth radio station). Vocally, think Granddaddy, Mercury Rev etc etc...

You will hear more out of these guys.

Go checkout their website for gig dates, news and more mp3s.

You give me Hamish

There's a song, and right now it's burning a hole in my soul. You've all heard of the artist, and you've probably even seen the song in a directory or on a CD somewhere, but you didn't listen, and you weren't paying attention.

My eyes are open.

If anyone can hook me up with Hamish's new album (Hamish - Of Moments In Colour) I shall love them forever.

As a fuck son, you sucked..

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a junky-punky type three piece from NYC. A lot of people are comparing them to the garage-type stylings of the white stripes, the hives and strokes.. but, they're more the love child of jon spencer blues explosion and le tigre. don't ask me how they would have children, maybe it's like a dave crosby and melissa etheridge thing, but, the yeah yeah yeahs are much much better. The first track from their self-titled debut EP is called Bang!

And, i mean.. the song has hand clapping, what more can i say?

I Can't Help Myself...

Another post, some sort of record. Hot Hot Heat are Hot Hot Shit. I've had a number of random 'Heat mp3s for about six months, but their new EP Knock Knock Knock has really taken them to a new place.

Fuck, i don't know, no words.. i could bullshit about how they're kinda a new-wave-80's-pop-4-piece but you should just download the first track from the EP, it's called "Le Le Low".

Download it, find someone who loves it as much as you and make Hot Hot babies.

The Oxes Rawk Your Soxes

It's true! Don't believe me? Check out the opening track from their self titled LP. It's called "Dear Spirit, I'm From France". Yes, it's over 8mb, but if you like the rock and the roll, you can't live without it.

P.S. Don't hold your breath for the vocals to begin.

Other Oxes mp3s can be found [HERE]

When releasing.. stuff.. Oxes choose to stay @ Monitor Records
