Even + The Mess hall + The WakeUps @ the Hopetoun Hotel. Its a night of firsts, my first time at the Hoey, my first time seeing
Even, and possibly the first time Ive seen someone try to skank to even
The Hoey is a classic pub rock venue, small and cosy with an amazing atmosphere and acoustics, the sort of venue that isnt in vogue anymore, which is a damn shame. By the time that I rocked up
the wake ups were in full swing, their old moniker, the scruffs is a more apt description of these guys, not the prettiest band out there, but boy howdy they can play. Hard, dirty rock, with an energy reminiscent of
You Am I,
the Hives and new boy wonders
the vines, the kind of music your mother always warned you about Im looking forward to seeing these guys, and the lead singer informed me that they have an album out in 3 weeks or so, keep an eye out for that.
Up next were the
mess hall, I didnt really know where to place these guys, but I think that if the
white stripes and
AD/DC had a lovechild, and this lovechild was raised in Tamworth, that would be the mess hall. Two guys, a fucking lot of noise, just straight up bluesy folk rock, not really my style but they did grow on me towards the end.
Several beers later the crowd are getting antsy waiting for Even to start. For those of you not familiar with these Melbourne indie guitar pop superheroes, be ashamed, very ashamed. Their set was filled with blistering pop riffs and hair, lots of hair, in fact Im sure the guitarist was in the
Beatles at some point, either that or he has some serious Beatles envy going on. At this point I should explain the reference to skanking, the dude in front of me was wearing a down by law jacket, and whilst very pissed he decided that he would dance to even, in a semi skanking-elvis type manner, given a few more beers I probably would have joined him. Even played a mix of new and old songs, they opened with
'No Surprises', perhaps my favourite Even song, playing some perennial favourites like
black umbrella and
sunshine comes before moving on to songs from their latest effort
A different high, simply brilliant. Songs like
'Kommercial Radio' and
Shining Star showed how amazing these guys are, and why they have built a dedicated following and a reputation as one of Australias best live acts. They finished up with
'we are the purple nazz' but the crowd demanded more, I was yelling out
'Stop and Go Man' and the drummer from the mess ups agreed with my pick of encore, yelling out 'play stop and go man you poofters'; it doesnt get much better than that. If you get the chance go see them live they are fucking excellent.
Kodos is a reminiscing to
Even - No Surprises (128kbps), 2.5MB
Even - Kommercial Radio (190kbps), 5.3MB
