Forget Neko Case, this is the New Pornographers kid with the dope hooks:

Carl Newman just released his solo album, The Slow Wonder. It's power pop plus awesome. The album is full of songs at least as great as this, but 'The Town Halo' sounds immediately genius:

"Back from the program, an all girl Jesus
we're proud to say, we loved her to pieces"

Okay, it doesnt read that well, but in the song it is revelatory. Honest.

great post; this album is the kind of stuff jjj of 2000 would flog the hell out of. Town Halo is awesome, but so is "Secretarial", "Drink To Me, Baby" and "Most of Us Prizefighters". It's a really complete work.

Goes to show Pitchfork is really the hitmaker par excellence recently.

"35 In The Shade" is doing wonders for me too.

Oh yeah, and leaving "The Miracle Drug" of this list was a vast oversight on both our parts.

Not to mention 'on the table' which is getting shitload of airplay on jjj at the moment. "Doh Re Me Innocent". If anyone has this album, spread it on the #themp3alt!
