Sometimes, no matter how exceptional a band might be, they languish in obscurity when they should be conquering the world, Darkness style. Pity poor Walter Martin and Matt Barrick then, for they have suffered through 9 years and two bands worth of indifference. Their previous band Jonathan Fire*Eater groaned under the weight of critical adoration upon the release of their debut album, but were neglected in the wake of Britpop's crashing and burning around the same time. The band later collapsed under the weight of their perceived commercial failure (the perils of signing to a major label!). Now, as two-fifths of The Walkmen, the pair seem doomed to repeat history. Debut album, Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone, while every bit as accomplished and majestic as, say, Interpol's Turn On The Bright Lights, failed to loosen the indie public's wallets. They're even from New York, and as such were au fait with the zeitgeist. Like fellow ignored pop geniuses XTC, their schtick seems to both coincide and remain at odds with the current music scene, which is hardly their fault, and certainly not something that should stop you from liking them.
